Gasoline quotas are a big step for social justice
After two years, the gasoline quota scheme finally came to fruition, according to Shana. Although the government is announcing the plan, the leaders of the three powers have not only agreed to implement it, but have considered it necessary in the current situation. Of course, the increase in fuel prices has not always been unreasonable with the announcement of the subsidy plan for 18 million households, and the government’s plan means paying attention to the low-income sections of society. Although the increase in gasoline has calmed the general atmosphere of the society to some extent, analysts consider the implementation of this plan necessary due to the unfavorable economic conditions. In this regard, Saeed Lilaz, an expert on economic issues, while confirming the above plan, considered it in the interest of the country and said: “It has been nearly two years since the government was introduced to reform the price of gasoline. I am glad that this step has been taken now, although this plan is still incomplete. I am sure that the above plan is a big step towards social justice in Iran, and more than any other plan, it can improve the economic situation in the long run.
How do you see the scattered protests?
In my opinion, the problems and challenges of the people are elsewhere and not just about this plan. It is good that you are giving the upper echelons of the society fuel to the deprived cities, and the people’s protest is because they have used the current as a symbolic excuse and they want to raise the rest of the problems. But they do not know that this is the result of corruption that has plagued our country for more than 15 years and does not leave and reacts to all kinds of discrimination, otherwise when the gasoline subsidy of the first decile of society is 23 times that of the tenth decile of society – given this Gap – We can say that the gasoline quota plan is to return this amount to low-income people. In 1989, when the first wave of subsidy payments and the realization of gasoline prices were introduced, we witnessed a new development in improving the economic situation, and now I believe that this plan can improve the situation after a short time. I believe that in addition to being a positive and forward-looking step, the social situation in society is improving and the purchasing power of low-income people is increasing. We are now facing a downturn crisis that makes it difficult to even buy bread, and this is all the reason for the inefficiencies that can be improved with the government’s new gasoline plan.
To what extent can the addition of a subsidy to 18 million households reduce the negative consequences of rising gasoline prices?
Interestingly, 18 million households can benefit from the project. This can be a point of hope in the project. When we give people gasoline, we give it to those who have a car to use it, but when we give people gasoline money, we actually give people two options: one is that they can have gas to drive, and so on. That they can have the right to choose. Suppose a family of four who use a subsidy of 200,000 tomans a month can have about 200 liters of gasoline from next month, and even if they have a car, they will have 260 liters of gasoline per month, depending on the 60 liter monthly quota. For the first time, those who do not have a car can receive their subsidies directly from fuel. So this can be a very important step for the country’s economy and reduce the class divide.
Do you think that the protests may be abused? Who will benefit from this situation?
No one is against popular protests, it is the right of the people to oppose or agree to this plan, but if the media, especially the national media, wants to cover this news, it must give the government at least two weeks to deliver on its promise to the people. It wants to increase and implement the cash subsidy of two-thirds of the people. Now is not the time to protest. National wealth, ie oil, has become a factor in air pollution and environmental degradation in Iran. Even if we put this wealth in the well, it is better than the first cause of the spread of cancer in the people! Now the government wants to take a positive step in reducing the number of diseases transmitted to people by air pollution. He must be supported.
How do you assess the protests of some religious representatives and elders?
In my opinion, it would be extremely unfair for some members of parliament to object to this plan. Because they have accepted this plan in various laws and they know that the country’s economy has no choice but to implement this plan. Fuel price adjustments may have been considered a plan two years ago, but now they have nothing to do with it. However, by doing so, the government will give all sections of the country the power to choose what to do with the fuel money that will be their share. With this plan, instead of paying attention to the upper strata of society, attention will be paid to all people. This is something that will be taken into account if it is told exactly to the authorities. This plan can be useful for all people, especially low-income people.
